* Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly? - Astaire was the better dancer of the two — but, probably, the ONLY better male dancer in cinematic history. But Kelly was the more comprehensively gifted: better singer, better actor, produced, directed, etc. It’s like comparing Ted Williams and Willie Mays. The answer to that question is Mays; the answer to this question is Kelly.
* Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday? - Fitzgerald was objectively a much more accomplished musician, and as I age the “magic” of Holiday wears thin on me. So the SURFACE answer is Fitzgerald. But the DEEP answer to this question is “Bessie Smith.”
* Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant? - The answer is Cary Grant, but that’s like saying that the sky is blue. Cary Grant was the greatest movie star in Hollywood’s history, full stop.
