prince is getting a hip replacement, but all I need is a new server.
So I think I’ve almost fallen off the front page of Digg.com by now… whoa. Someone “dugg” an old (bossy, idealistic, didactic, but sincere… sigh) post of mine about how to deal with website “trolls”, and in the space of 24 hours, it went from a small item in Tech News to the “popular” section and BAM!
This is early in the process:

Current Digg count is now well over 600….
If you were trying to access my site earlier, the traffic crashed me for about 3 hours (give or take a few moments of up-ness.)
What’s funny is that the post was more than a year old, and hardly anyone noticed. Still.
A few things:
While I still think people need to be kinder to one another online, I have definitely learned that you can’t make anyone change unless changing was something they’d considered anyway. You can only be the person you want to be and leave it at that. Build the relationships that matter to you, and let the rest lie.
It’s very strange to have people decide about who you are and what your writing is worth based on a single old post on your blog. Seriously.
Irony is alive and well on the Internet, and you have to laugh or you’ll find it a little depressing.
Originality is slightly less alive and well.
I’m way less prone to sweat the stupid crap that goes on, and just walk away from it — or delete it. Either way.
I still really, really love people.
And that’s that.

Hey Meg, Prince isn’t getting a hip replacement. That story, that was widely published in the UK, turns out to have originated in the National Enquirer.
Besides, he just held an amazing post-Oscar bash that showcased his well-oiled hips in action… and jammed with Stevie Wonder!

As always, love your blog, will use “assholism” in more sentences in the future. And “blatantly hot ass.” >_

I love the way you write! I used to consider myself an okay writer but after reading your writing I really need to step the bar up a few (thousand) notches. I’m bookmarking your site as I write this…don’t ask me how I’m typing and moving the mouse at the same time…it just took some practice lol :)

Hi Meg,
I can totally relate. Some of my blog posts are insanely popular, some are absolutely not taken into account at all. But I still love blogging. I love it so much I’m gonna get serious and switch to WordPress.
:)
And include more Ryan Reynolds content (I am sure you’ve already read my movie review of Definitely, Maybe) ;) Have a good week!

Now all you have to do is triumph over the Rickrolled meme.

So much for that ‘conversation’ ideology. Rule #1e of the net, ignore comments that are useless, which by the numbers, is most. Heh.

I love how that one commenter (in the new batch of comments) on the old post basically illustrated what you said, point by point, without even realizing it. Trolls are also not big on INSIGHT.

In case nobody has mentioned this, Digg is populated by a lot of witless dorks. If any of them were critical of you or your writing, it’s only because their Mom asked them to finally move out again, and they were redirecting their frustration.
