this blog? does not vacation.

meg’s feet were here
People always tell me that Internet activities slow down in the summertime, because everyone is spending their time outdoors and heading off on vacations.
Which is true… to a point.
But the almighty Facebook has proven to me that MY contention was right all along. People ARE online all summer — posting tanned photos of themselves, updating their statii to reveal their next sunny destination, gloating about how they’re not at work… you name it.
And some of us who take our vacations in the fall (Cali! September! Woo!) are still at work, eating salad at our desks, surfing about the Web on our lunch hours, and wondering how people’s statii keep changing when they’re supposedly “at the beach.”
So, whether you’re sitting around in your bikini “just taking a moment online”, or sitting at work basking in air conditioning, I’ve got some questions…
-
1. Are you actually going anywhere on vacation this summer?
2. Are you going where you would ideally go? Where WOULD you ideally go?
3. What’s the weather like where you are?
4. How do you wish the weather was where you are?
5. What is your most important piece of summertime apparel?
6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing?
7. Do you own Crocs?
8. Do you want to apologize?
9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often?
10. Mojito?
And remember: for every one of you that doesn’t answer, I’ll flail at a butterfly.

1. Yes, I’m going to volunteer for a week at the family camp my parents run. It will be nice to get out of the office for a week!
2. I guess technically, no. Ideally I’d love to go somewhere like Italy or Spain, but I can’t afford those places. However, I take most of my vacation time in December, when our family migrates to Hawaii for a few weeks. Now THAT is perfection!
3. Same as yours.
4. Sunnier and hotter. However this week is supposed to be spectacular! It’s hard working in an office in the summers when the weather is like this.
5. Flip flops and a cute pair of shorts.
6. Speedos. For the love of all that is holy, those atrocities need to be forbidden!
7. No
8. N/A
9. I’m online less, because I’m outside more. I live for the summers, and spend as much time outdoors as possible.
10. Please and thank you!

1. Are you actually going anywhere on vacation this summer?
I went to Niagara Falls for our best friends’ wedding. I call this a forced vacation, we couldn’t exactly NOT go!
2. Are you going where you would ideally go? Where WOULD you ideally go?
I would never pick Niagara as a vacation destination, been there done that. And I think it’s good for about an hour’s worth of entertainment and a couple of photos, if that. I would ideally go to France, or England, or Thailand, or Australia. Or maybe all 4 if money and time were no object!!
3. What’s the weather like where you are?
I’m in Vancouver. It’s hot and sunny.
4. How do you wish the weather was where you are?
I like the sunny. I would prefer if it weren’t so hot.
5. What is your most important piece of summertime apparel?
Um. Tshirts? Maybe flip flops.
6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing?
Overly skimpy tops when they’re not at the beach.
7. Do you own Crocs?
HELL NO
8. Do you want to apologize?
Most certainly not.
9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often?
Don’t even pretend. Everyone knows I’m online plenty during the summer. But I don’t really take vacation, so that’s no surprise. I’m saving up my vacation days for my honeymoon next year :)
10. Mojito?
Margarita!
July 9th, 2007 at 9:54 am

6. tank tops on men…never a good idea
7. i live in boulder…birthplace of the croc. i own 3 pairs
8. no, i will not apologize. i don’t really wear them in the summer though, unless i am working in the yard. though my pregnant feet are finding them damn comfy these days.
9. it’s too hot to be outside here, so my love affair with my laptop endures within the air conditioned confines of my home.
10. can i get one in about 5 weeks after this baby comes out? along with many pints of guinness, a bottle of wine, a pitcher of sangria, and a six-pack of corona with plenty of lime.

6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing?

8. Do you want to apologize?

9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often?
no change but wait for the three weeks i’m not chained to this desk … ahem … though i am of course bringing my laptop with me and wifi is not that hard to find …

1. For my vacation I’m returning to Canada…Edmonton to be exact…but also Vancouver for a bit.
2. Yeah, Canada is where I’d ideally be. Or the desert…Middle East somewhere.
3. Actual weather here: Cool. Variable.
4. Preferred weather here: Hot. Consistent.
5. Essential summer apparel? No such thing. That’s not how I roll.
6. I want people to STOP wearing things that are too small for them. If it hangs out of what you wear, then what you wear is not big enough. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate minimal clothing as much as the next guy, but there is a ratio of cloth : skin that needs to be observed, isn’t there?
7. No Crocs.
8. If I did own Crocs, most likely not. They’re pretty unapologetic footwear.
9. Summer hasn’t happened yet in the UK, so…no.
10. Do they make a mojito without the sugar?
July 9th, 2007 at 11:27 am
1. We might untangle the canoe from the garage and go loll around on a lake, but that’s it.
2. Pretty much. Ideally, I’d like to throw a week’s camping trip in there, but no can do.
3. Hot, hazy, chance of thunderstorms.
4. Moderate, overcast, chance of gentle rain.
5. Sunscreen and Vans.
6. Ill-fitting clothing in obnoxiously bright colors.
7. No.
8. No.
9. Not really.
10. Yes, please. Extra mint, thanks!
July 9th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
1. Yes, three weeks in Europe: Wales, Germany, Italy
2. Yes, for this summer it’s ideal
3. 114 degrees, sunny, cloudless, DRY
4. 114 degress, sunny, cloudless, DRY
5. sunscreen
6. SPEEDOS
7. In hot pink and light blue
8. No, should I?
9. Nope
10. Definitely!
July 9th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
You’re going to flail at butterflies anyway! That’s not a good incentive, really!
I only have a second to answer (sneak surfing!)
Not going anywhere this year due to a vacation time mixup that just about made my head implode. Would love, love, LOVE to go on a Carribean cruise.
Chat later,
Shannon

1. I’m coming back to Vancouver for business and pleasure in August. Might be going to Toronto and Berlin in the fall. Definitely going to Turkey and Israel in November.
2. I kinda want to go everywhere, so that’s a satisfactory set of for the rest of 2007.
3. According to the awesome http://www.gozo.ws/, it’s 24.7°C. Mind you, it’s 9:45pm here.
4. That’s pretty much ideal. A couple of weeks ago it was in the 38°C, and that was absurd. We promptly went out and bought an air-conditioner.
5. My goofy Keens sandals. I just finished singing their praises on Jen’s blog (http://tinyurl.com/3436jn).
6. Hmmm…the fashions of this tiny island leave much to be desired. Let’s just leave it at that.
7. No, even in rural Malta I have some standards.
8. Heh.
9. A little bit, I’m probably done 10%?
10. No thanks, but by all means, you go ahead.
July 9th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
1. Yes! I’m going to a lovely house (rented) with my inlaws for 10 days in Lincoln City, Oregon. Right on the beach!
2. Hmmm, well in the sense that usually my ideal is somewhere that I’ve never been, yes. But on the other hand, Oregon doesn’t quite appeal to me like the south of France does.
3. Currently? Sunny.
4. I’m pretty happy with the sun at the moment. I do enjoy the warm cloudy days though.
5. Tanktops. I’m pregnant, although only 20 weeks, and am really feeling the heat these days. So if I’m not in a tanktop I’m roasting.
6. Shirts that reveal so much boob that you start wondering where in the world her nipples are. Come on now. Oh, I guess those are around in the winter too.
7. Yes. They were a gift.
8. Um, well they’re good for wearing around the house if the floor is dirty. :)
9. It hasn’t really changed radically. I AM outside more often, but I wasn’t really glued to the computer before. It’s pretty much the same. And my desire to spend less time on the computer remains about the same too.
10. I have to admit that I don’t even know what a mojito is. But heck, I’ll have one.
July 9th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
1. We’ve already been to the beach a couple times, but we’ll go again later this summer for a week. Woo!
2. Yes, I love our beach. But I would also like to go to Dublin, Cork, Paris, Tampere (Finland), Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Banff.
3. Hazy, hot, and humid. The air is bad.
4. Clear, warm, and dry.
5. My cropped denims. Also my new tunic-length tee.
6. Tiny shorts that look like underpants.
7. No.
8. Not anymore.
9. Just pretending.
10. Oh yes, thanks!
July 9th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
1. I have no holiday plans other than camping in Nordegg
2. Ireland, or Disneyworld
3. Cloudy and windy and more or less miserable
4. Hot and dry and sunny
5. Shorts and flip flops
6. tube tops…or the girls who wear shorts over their bikini bottoms but leave the fly undone.
7. Yes
8. No. I wear them exclusively at the pool when I lifeguard
9. Hasn’t changed much.
10. Sure…why not?
July 9th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
1. The beaches of southern New Jersey and NY City. Not the beaches, just the city.
2. The beaches of southern France
3. 80 degrees and sunny (Go Seattle!)
4. 80 degrees and sunny
5. Sandals
6. Patchouli. It doesn’t sweat well. (for you, Meg)
7. Can’t see buying ‘em.
8. I’m sorry. Did I offend you?
9. Not since I started working at Microsoft
10. Oh, yeah!

1. Are you actually going anywhere on vacation this summer? I already took my “real” “vacation” this summer and I am bummed. It was my first one in YEARS but there were fires, and I was just getting over a friend’s memorial, so it was weird and hard and I never really got to relax. *sigh* :(
2. Are you going where you would ideally go? Where WOULD you ideally go? I would ideally go almost anywhere but the tops are Spain, Somewere tropical, and on some huge camping/backpacking excursion for months.
3. What’s the weather like where you are? Hot. Hot. Hot. 109F (eleventy billion in Celsius, I think) and smokey. There are so many fires around me that the air is just a constant brown haze and you can’t see the mountains. I would call it opressive except there is no humidity, with humidity it would be opressive, but right now it is just hot and ugly.
4. How do you wish the weather was where you are? Warm. Gentle. Rainy more often. Never hot. Always nice.
5. What is your most important piece of summertime apparel? Flips Flops, not clomp clomps either, just regular flat flip flops. And sunscreen.
6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing? Thong bikinis.
7. Do you own Crocs? Oh God no.
8. Do you want to apologize? You better.
9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often? I have a job. I don’t understand how I could be outside more often. PLus, ironically, summer is the season I spend outside in my city the least because it is too hot. Spring and fall are great though and winter is okay.
10. Mojito? Please.
July 9th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
1. Vacation? What’s that? (I’m going to a conference in Chicago, does that count?)
2. Italy.
3. Not as hot as last week, thank goodness.
4. A bit wetter. Because otherwise we’re going to catch on fire.
5. Sunglasses, of course.
6. Cut-off shorts with the pockets hanging out below. And muscle tees. (Yep. This is Montana.)
7. I’m wearing my Crocs flip-flops right now. And I have the regular ones, too.
8. Maybe just a little.
9. Yes, and no.
10. Margarita.

1. Are you actually going anywhere on vacation this summer? Yes, but one is with my family (parents and bro et al) and the other with my in-laws. It’ll be fun. No really, we all get along great.
Especially with copious amounts of bevies
2. Are you going where you would ideally go? Where WOULD you ideally go?
Not my ideal. Ideal would involve snorkeling in the Caribbean. Alas, a Northern SK lake will have to do.
3. What’s the weather like where you are?
Raining today but given that we had 25 – 40 degree weather for the last two and half weeks, it’s welcome.
4. How do you wish the weather was where you are?
Today, rain is perfect. Tomorrow, sunny and 25 would be perfect.
5. What is your most important piece of summertime apparel?
I have 3. Tank top, capris and flip flops.
6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing?
Bikinis. Either I am jealous of you fantastic body or oy, did ya look in the mirror before you left the house?
7. Do you own Crocs?
No. They are cute on kids but that is about it.
8. Do you want to apologize?
9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often?
It’s the same, I am ashamed to admit. Damn Crackbook.
10. Mojito? Oh yes, please, that would be fantastic.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:15 pm
1. that depends on Ty’s chemo, but I’d love to just go. just get out and go somewhere sunny with a beach, kick back on a beach chair, put my toes in the sand, and read.
2. I’d take him swimming with dolphins in - Hawaii. Otherwise, England - I hear there’s actually a possibility of no rain during the summer.
3. muy caliente

9. nope.
10. yes please!
July 10th, 2007 at 9:43 am
1. Are you actually going anywhere on vacation this summer? Yes! To the Oregon Coast and on an Alaskan Cruise! I can’t wait!
2. Are you going where you would ideally go? Where WOULD you ideally go? Australia…or back to Hawaii
3. What’s the weather like where you are? Hot! But not that hot compared to what it was like for me growing up.
4. How do you wish the weather was where you are? It’s perfectly fine!
5. What is your most important piece of summertime apparel? Flip flops or my Crocs
6. What item of summertime apparel do you wish other people would STOP wearing? Too tight tops that leave their bellys hanging out with shorts that show a bit of bum on the bottom. Ick.
7. Do you own Crocs? Yes, but I want to buy the Mary Jane crocs…so cute!
8. Do you want to apologize? Nope.
9. Has the amount of time you spend online changed radically, or are you just pretending to be outside more often? Um…yes, because I’m not working. I have more hours in the day to waste!
10. Mojito? Sure!
July 10th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
1. I went to South Korea and then spent a week at the beach in south Florida.
2. The Korea trip was kind of once-in-a-lifetime and, while not perfect, was well worth it. And I got to spend time with my brother at the beach, so yeah, both trips were where I wanted to be.
3. In Florida: Hot and humid — and will be until October.
4. Warm. Or even hot during the day if it could just cool off at night. This all-the-time hot gets to me.
5. Nothing [smirk].
6. I don’t much care what other people wear.
7. People tell me that Crocs are really comfortable. I can’t get past them looking ugly as sin. I won’t even try them on.
8. I don’t want to apologize, but it seems I always do. I’m sorry….
9. I’m always erratic about my time online, but it’s too freakin’ hot to be outside.
10. Not while I’m surfing.
