list monday: the 10 best things I ever ate that probably had too many calories.

Filed under: stuff — meg @ 8:55 am

I like many healthy things. In fact, I like more healthy things than NOT healthy things. And I’m not saying the following things aren’t healthy. But they probably won’t contribute to size two aspirations.

1. Lamb souvlaki from a now-closed restaurant on Denman in Vancouver — just this gorgeous thing in a foil envelope that was like heaven in your mouth. It was HUGE. And LEMONY. And dripping with tzatziki.

2. Salmon sashimi at Kamei Royale on Alberni. Which is not fattening unless you have TWO ORDERS ALL TO YOURSELF.

3. My first Krispy Kreme from the Konveyor Belt in Mount Vernon, WA. I know people slam the hell out of these things, and I’m not a glazed donut person, but FOR THE LOVE. It WAS SUGAR STRAIGHT TO THE HEART. And my arteries. But I only ate the one. Back off.

4. My mom’s French onion soup is amazing. She showed me how to make it, and mine is totally fine, but there’s something about the Mom that makes it taste better. And with the bread? And the two kinds of cheese? All melty? Ohhh.

5. The “everything sandwich” from a place I forget the name of, Hub Mall, University of Alberta. My friend’s brother worked there, and it was like OH SANDWICH. He would give me one for free most weeks, which may be part of the love, but it was the perfect combination of all these Italian meats and cheeses and oil and vinegar and OHHHH. I haven’t had one in 12 years, but still I remember. And I’m not even really a sandwich person.

6. The fish and chips from Morris’ Fireside in Cannon Beach, OR, the last time I was there with Catherine in September. The fish was like butter. Which sounds gross, but honestly. Best Fish and Chips EVER.

7. The garlic fries at Safeco Stadium are AWESOME. Enough said. My friend made me chew an entire pack of gum in the car on the way home.

8. My first ever mouthful of Ben and Jerry’s Vermonty Python ice cream changed my life.

9. The lemon tart at this place right next to a Peet’s in San Diego was AMAZING. I wish I could remember the damn name of the cafe. But the tart! Just lemon. And tart. AWESOME.

10. I ate a croissant at La Panier (or was it Le?) in Pike Place Market in Seattle that literally broke into a thousand happy pieces in my mouth. I felt like I’d just munched on a sunbeam. Which sounds really weird.

Give us some of your best tastes and recommendations… and don’t spare the calories.

    9. Morravian Cake they sell it at local farmers markets and it is amazing.
    10. Mexican fried ice cream and also tempora red bean ice cream.

  3. Chuck Says:

    1. The mighty What-A-Burger of my youth (they’re smaller now). At least 1/3 lb, thin and wide, salted like crazy and with raw onions. I dream of this still (*sigh* only in South and Southwest U.S.).
    2. The porterhouse at the steak house I worked at in college. A full pound, medium rare, melted in my mouth.
    3. Haagen-Dazs chocolate-peanut butter ice cream. The best of this blend ever.
    4. Chimichangas from a local deli. I would eat three of them, COLD, in five minutes at about 1000 calories.
    5. My mother-in-law’s fried catfish, fresh from the lake.
    6. Fries from Dick’s Drive-In (Seattle). Disgusting and decadent.
    7. Any ice cream with any caramel sauce (lately).
    8. My mom’s corn beef.
    9. My daughter’s clam chowder.
    10. My own chili, unfit for humans beside me (also works as a solvent).

  4. Cathie Says:

    1. Twisted Mac & Cheese at the Hard Rock Cafe.

    2. My corned beef dinner (just finished the leftovers!)

    3. The Cuban pressed sandwiches at a new Cuban place close by. Layers of pork and ham and cheese and pickles, all in crusty toasted frech bread.

    4. My seafood chowder - made with lots of real CREAM.

    5. Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia WITH hot fudge and whipped cream.

    6. VENTI Peppermint Mochas with whole milk and whipped cream :)

    7. The deep fried french toast I had at Disney. OMG.

    8. Roast beef sandwiches with horseradish sauce at a local place - they have to have about 2 inches of the most thinly sliced warm, med rare beef in these BUTTERED rolls.

    9. The Death by Chocolate torte at my favorite local restaurant.

    10. The Italian sandwiches we drive an over an hour for, at an Italian Deli I used to live near. Layers of cold cuts and cheese, with all the fixings, including hot peppers, on a HUGE fresh baked scali roll.

  5. James Says:

    1. There’s a place in Victoria, right out on the harbor, that does the most amazing breaded scallops you will ever, ever imagine could exist and be able to eat. Sweet Jesus, those things just dissolved in my mouth filling it with that complex shell fishy taste fiesta.

    2. L’s lasagna. Hard to explain, but it’s amazing.

    3. I had a game bird at Blonde in Calgary. That was average, but the bread pudding that was served with it? That was to die for.

    4. I have a passionate love of bread that is almost indecent at times. I think the best bread I ever had was at a bakery in Lehenhof in Bavaria (Germany) that was organic and nigh on orgasmic.

    5. In Lebanon they do a dish made from thinly sliced liver fried in a rich spicy sauce. I had it in Riyadh at a restaraunt called Gad. I used to go there every week and order at least one portion. I love liver, but this was adorable.
