  1. If you could design your ideal home, what three design elements/features/functions would your home have (money is no object)?
  2. What do you need to have in your home to feel, well… at home?
  3. Are you living in the city/area you wish to be living in? If not, where would you be?
  4. Is your happiness heavily dependent on your immediate environment?
  5. Do you have an interest in decor, or just comfort in general?
  6. Would you rather have new things, or old things, or both?
  7. If you’re in a relationship, do you share the same aesthetic?
  8. How do you feel about burgundy and dark green (someone out there is smirking right now)?

  1. Tiana Says:

    1-a wood-burning fireplace that divides 2 rooms.
2-snugly blankets and good paint colours
3-In the city yes but not the neighbourhood. We want (well, I want) to move to Westboro (http://www.westboro-village.com/en/) and I have a plan to have a decent house there by mid 2014
    4-Well I guess so. I wouldn’t be happy living in a hovel.
5-I’m an Interior Designer…so…yeah decor is important…but not as much as design!
    6-A nice mix of both
7-No, but I win because I am schooled in taste.
    8-EWWW!

  2. James Says:

    1. A truly massive cedar deck. A skylight over the bed. An open fire.
    2. Music. Food.
    3. No. I hate England. I want badly to be in Calgary again.
    4. Yes and no. Any sufficiently harsh environment does rather take the fun out of things. Good friends can make most hells seem pretty good.
    5. I definitely have an interest in decor but not really an interest in buying furniture. I’d rather spend my money on something else, to be honest.
    6. Both. I like functional things that are cool and make my lifestyle possible.
    7. Yes, when it comes to the selection and function of things. When it comes to color/style, maybe not so much. But the latter is not important to me.
    8. Burgundy and dark green? Is it 1996 again?

  3. Darren Says:

For Christmas, I received a book called, uh, “The Barefoot Home”. I’m not much for coffee table books, but it quite does a decent job of expressing my house-building philosophy: http://tinyurl.com/utpn9. That’s a link to Amazon, but here’s the website associated with the book: http://www.barefoothome.com/.

  4. meg Says:

James, I just laughed out loud. I think those colours still can work beautifully, but they’re not mine. That was mostly a joke on one of my friends, who shall remain unnamed.

My colours are white, chocolate and espresso brown, robin’s egg blue (and ice blue), taupe, and celadon green.

  5. doug Says:

    1. I’m big on the Frank Lloyd Wright philosophy of designing a building to fit in with its environment from an architectural standpoint, as well as the contruction materials used. Consequently, wood floors, stone fireplaces and foundations, and lots of natural light (through windows with great views) are at the top of my list.
    2. Comfortable seating, and a wonderfully-functional kitchen.
    3. No. In the mountains, ideally on the shore of a body of water and surrounded by trees.
    4. Not heavily, no.
    5. 70/30 in favour of comfort.
    6. Both.
    7. N/A
    8. Burgundy, indifferent, dark green, in favour, but both work in the right setting.

  6. lizardek Says:

    1. TALL BIG windows and lots of ‘em, a paving stone terrace, walk-in closets in every room

    2. books

    3. No. Chicago :) …well, nah, I like it well enough where I am

    4. Yes

    5. Yes to both

    6. a good blend of both

    7. Not quite, but close enough most of the time

    8. That’s my bedroom colors. I AM stuck in 1996, but it’s so comforting!

  7. Heather Says:

    1) Lots of natural light and bright spaces. I’ve always wanted one of those houses with the little room/look-out on the third or fourth floor. Fireplaces and wood floors.
2)I need to have lots of green things and warm, natural colors with bright, large windows. Oh, and a big cozy chair.
3)No. I wish to be living in Vermont again, or at least some place more snowy and chilly than Pittsburgh.
4)Yes; I believe your connection to your environment can completly determine your ability for happiness. I got my degree in that theory!
    5)Comfort.
6)A mix of old and new.
7)Well, my plants and I both firmly agree that we need to live in a place that encourages them to be fruitful and multiply. We are cool like that.
8)I kind of like burgandy. I love dark green. Not so sure about the combo…

  8. meg Says:

    1. I would really want a gorgeous, hard-core kitchen with a stainless steel fridge and major gas range with convection oven. And lots of counter space! Beyond that, I’d love hardwood floors and big, big windows.

    2. I need my home to smell good, and I need all my white linens… sheets and towels. Clean and fresh! And wireless internet and Martin, my iBook.

    3. I would live here, San Diego, or Seattle, based on the places I’ve lived or spent time at, and the community I would need for work.

    4. More and more all the time.

    5. Decor and comfort, equally. I think my ideas about decor take human needs and desires heavily into account. Except maybe my love of white. That’s a bit dangerous.

    6. I love some antique stuff, but I’m not into fussy. I like dark woods, old unique textiles, old clocks, old books, and old lamps. I love the juxtaposition of simple old stuff with modern items. And I love clean lines above all.

    7. I’d think we’d need to not hate each other’s taste. A guy who likes those leathery sack couches:

    http://www.rossauction.com/topics/060128/albums/furniture/full/black_leather_couch.jpg

…might have trouble with me, to say the least.

    8. I can appreciate the warmth of both colours. I think as long as design is current, I think most colours are good. I’m just little overwhelmed by the fact that EVERYONE USES THAT COMBO. But I also hate purple in decorating… so. And mustards.

  9. carmie Says:

    1. As green as possible - solar panels, well-insulated, etc. A cozy two-story spiral-staircased home with recycled hardwood floors and odd little windows in odd places, nestled into 40 acres in the Rockies somewhere. Oh, and a KILLER kitchen with a window over the sink!
    2. Not so big and sprawling, easy to manage. Non-creaky floors. Cream walls, dark shiny furniture, cream tab-tops to let swaths of buttery light in, lemon furniture polish.
    3. Dear God, no. Either actually IN the Rockies or somewhere close to the ocean.
    4. No, but a girl can dream, right?
    5. Yes, but in a comfortable way.
    6. New toilet paper. Old dishes.
    7. For the most part, although I don’t think he shares my fondness for antique glasswares, houseplants, and five-pointed stars. And I don’t much care for Klimt or his grandma’s afghans, but we both love ruby red.
    8. My parents have matching down parkas. My mom’s is burgundy and my dad’s is forest.

  10. Bozoette Mary Says:

    1. Comfy sofas and chairs, good lighting, thick rugs.
    2. The right pillows with the right smell.
    3. Pretty much, although I’d like to live in the city as opposed to the burbs.
    4. Only if my immediate environment is too hot or too cold and I don’t have the wherewithal to cope.
    5. My interest is in nice decor that contributes to my comfort.
    6. Both!
    7. Mostly.
    8. I like them fine, but not together.

  11. ponthei Says:

    1. Huge windows with a view of the sea. I hate electric light during the day so I want to let us much natural light in as I can. A kitchen we could use to cook and socialise in, with a big table where I could read the paper at the weekend. Oh and it would have to be a house, not a condo. I want my own front door onto the street and a back garden.
    2. My books, my photos, English tea, warm colours and my boyfriend (not in that order!)
    3. I’m very happy where I am at the moment.
    4. Yes and no. Having a flat I love to come home to at the end of the day makes a huge difference but people are the big thing.
    5. My interest in decor is growing by the day though is heavily influenced by how we would live in the space. I don’t like show rooms. I can’t wait to get my hands on my own place and really put my stamp on it. Some day…
    6. I love a mix of both. When we moved here we had to buy a whole flat’s worth of furniture, so Ikea was really the only option we found that had any semblance of style in our price range. However we did go to some house sales and we now have an old lamp that I absolutely love, oh and we bought some new art made out of old tin tiles by a Canadian artist.
    7. We do and we don’t. Architecturally-speaking we’re very alike, but colour is another matter. Currently my colour scheme is also the browns, blues and greens, though I’ve got some work cut out for me to actually bring the green into our house.
    8. Apologies to your friend, but burgundy and dark green together is just wrong.

  12. Cathie Says:

    1. The three most important design elements for me would have to be (1) location in a private, natural setting(2) fairly open floor plan (3) a very large screened in porch (for my hammocking and summer living without bugs) and a greenhouse style sunroom

    2. To feel at home, I would need *my* bed linens, my books, my music and my plants. Oh, and my hubby, too. :)

    3. Although I live in a lovely semi-rural town in a very private setting, I would much prefer to be in a warmer climate, always near the ocean.

    4. YES - most definitely. I am a home-body for the most part, so what I surround myself with is very important to my well-being.

    5. I have had a keen interest in decor and design since I was in young teen, but comfort is a basic part of good design to me.

    6. I like mixing a bit of both - mostly new with touches of old.

    7. Um, yeah - he does see it my way. ;)

    8. Love it. Had it for years = with navy. Now it has morphed into a more cranberry and olive scheme.

  13. lilie Says:

1.a. a proper library room: floor to ceiling bookshelves, a sliding ladder, and a big fireplace
    b. hardwood floors
    c. a big backyard with lots of trees (to attract native birds)

    2. Bookshelves, my antique quilt, my desk, prints to hang on the wall
    3. No no no. My answer changes daily, but right now I’d say Berlin.
    4. Oh yes, and how.
    5. Decor is very important to me, but I don’t sacrifice comfort.
    6. Apart from my ibook, I usually prefer old things, or new things that look like old things.
    7. No, we do not. We both like antiques, but not from the same era.
    8. It reminds me of Dawson’s Creek, which is not a good thing.

  14. Marg Says:

    1. A studio, a fireplace and a big sun porch
    2. cats
    3. If I had my druthers I’d live on the water.
    4. Absolutely
    5. I have an interest in both.
    6. Old things mostly but some new things have their place.
    7. Yes
    8. I’m tired of burgandy and green and have been since about 1972.
